For a proper symphonic movement, what better to include in a volume called An Orchestral Orchard than the Allegretto from Beethoven’s 7th? It starts with only plain chords back and forth between the tonic and dominant in the low register, and then adds layer after layer until the whole orchestra plays with full force. This is possible to imitate on piano by adding energy in the accompaniment texture and varying the melodic register, so the feeling of playing this arrangement could at least start to approach the epic experience of this magnificent movement. For the final round LH goes into triplet mode but RH still plays 8th and 16th notes, but it’s a good place to practice 3-against-2 polyrhythms in an otherwise friendly setting.
